VELscope® In New Lenox, IL

Did you know that oral cancer claims more lives each year than brain cancer, cervical cancer, and testicular cancer? Surprisingly, many people are still unaware of this fact. In 2015 alone, approximately 30,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer, and only slightly more than half of them will survive for more than five years without treatment.
Contrary to popular belief, simply avoiding alcohol and tobacco does not guarantee protection against oral cancer. Shockingly, over a quarter of all oral cancer cases are found in individuals who have never used these substances. The only way to truly safeguard yourself from oral cancer is by undergoing annual oral cancer screenings.
Fortunately, most dentists include an oral cancer examination as part of a routine dental checkup. However, diagnosing oral cancer can be challenging due to its symptoms often resembling less severe issues. This is where the VELscope® System comes in, providing dentists with valuable insights into what lies beneath the surface.

So what actually happens during a VELscope exam?
Dentists will thoroughly examine your glands, tongue, cheeks, teeth, and palate. Afterward, you will be given a pre-rinse solution to swish around your mouth. To protect your eyes during the examination of your oral cavity with the VELscrope®, special eyewear will be provided.
The VELscope® is a small device that emits blue light into your mouth. It helps to easily identify lesions and other signs of oral cancer, as they appear darker under this specialized light. If any symptoms are detected, the dentist may perform a biopsy on the spot to determine if it is oral cancer. The course of action will then be determined based on the biopsy results. Otherwise, another oral cancer screening will be conducted after one year.
